TUCKER TALKS: Going To Hell Edition

Well here we go again… time for another fantastic TUCKER TALKS article! However, unlike my first two reviews, this album is from the fiery depths of Rock n Roll. The Pretty Reckless is a band that I have always been fond of, and now that their new album is finally out it’s time to see if their talent can withstand the heavy blows of my criticism. Before I start, I’m just going to point out a fact that many of you are probably unaware of. Taylor Momsen, the lead singer of The Pretty Reckless, is a perfect example of what Rock music can do to you. So kids (if there are any taking a break from their busy schedules of napping and eating play-doh to read this article) this is your brain on Rock n Roll.

Follow Me Down [Track 1]:

The only thing can describe the first 30 seconds of this song is WTF?! All it is are sirens and a girl who sounds like she’s having the time of her life. The song eventually redeems itself when the instruments kick in, and if you don’t pay attention to the lyrics, which are a strange mix of sex and mental insanity, then it is actually a decent song. The bridge of the song seems to take it to a higher weirdness level, which I didn’t even think was possible. It is slowed down to an almost creepy speed, and an effect is put on Taylor’s voice which makes her sounds like a satanic siren. The music is good, but it might help if you guys turn down the creepiness.

Heaven Knows [Track 3]:

The Pretty Reckless seem to have a strange fascination with starting their songs off with weird fucking sound effects. This one starts off with a school bell ringing, and then progresses into some clapping that sounds similar to We Will Rock You by Queen. The music and tempo of this song makes you want to like it, but as soon as you even remotely listen to the lyrics you can never un-hear the awfulness. First off what the fuck does “pocket of high” mean?! Is this supposed to be some clever way to disguise the word drugs? You know what’s even better than trying to be clever? Making some actual fucking sense!

Sweet Things [Track 5]:

If I didn’t know any better, I’d swear that I was listening to 3 different songs. There’s a fast-paced rock one, a medium-paced creepy one, and a slow-paced one that has angelic singing. But just because this sounds like 3 different songs doesn’t mean that it’s 3 times as good. In fact, it’s exactly the opposite of that, and is just absolutely terrible. The music doesn’t blend together, the transitions are terrible, and the lyrics are fucking awful (once again). The entire song is weird, but the chorus takes it even further by sounding like the theme song for the witch from Hansel and Gretel. All of their songs before this one were half-decent, but I guess they got together and decided that they couldn’t make an entire album without at least one absolutely horrible song. Well mission accomplished guys!

Fucked Up World [Track 11]:

This is the moment I’ve been waiting for… an actual good song!! The music is good, the lyrics are actually decent for once, and Taylor does a great job of mixing her raspy voice with her harmonic voice. I feel like this song title perfectly explains the condition of the mind of whoever writes the lyrics for The Pretty Reckless, because inside your mind must be a fucked up world in order to come up with the shit that they sing about.

Conclusion:

This album has creepiness coming out of the ass, however the music on most of the songs is pretty good, so it’s not completely terrible. Next time I would suggest making a change and maybe try writing about something actually half cheerful for once. I give this album 3.5 out of 5 fuck up worlds.
